Game Reviews

DEJA Vu” is an adventure game released by KEMCO in 1988 for the NES.

The original version was “Deja Vu: A Nightmare Comes True,” part of the “MacVenture” adventure game series developed for the Macintosh by ICOM Simulations in the United States in 1985.

The game features a serious scenario that keeps the player’s hands sweating. The story of an amnesiac protagonist who uses various pieces of information to understand his situation and fight back by gathering evidence to clear his name is a suspenseful enough to be played today.

The incident takes place in Chicago, USA, around December 8, 1941. The newspaper in the game contains an article about the attack on Pearl Harbor by the former Japanese army.

KEMCO advertises that the scenario is based on an actual event and that “Chicago authorities have asked us to curb sales of the game because of its dangerous content.

It is a good old-fashioned, open-ended adventure game. The game provides a set of basic adventure game commands such as “move,” “examine,” “take,” and “open,” and allows the player to examine and pick up various items on the screen, including those not related to the strategy.

The “self” command, introduced throughout the MacVenture series to use tools against yourself, is already present in this title. For example, if you use a pistol against yourself, you will say “I’m tired” or “I want to get comfortable” and commit suicide, resulting in game over.

It is interesting to note that sometimes you dare to commit a criminal act in the game, although you will be arrested if you shoot people without care.

To complete “DEJA Vu,” you must recover your lost memories, solve the mystery, and solve the case. If you do not have enough evidence or have evidence against you, you will not be able to reach the ending and the game will be over.

Even if the game is over, you can resume the game from the previous point. In addition, while there is a high degree of freedom of action, there is no situation that makes the game impossible to complete, and the game is designed in such a way that you can always solve the puzzle and clear the game if you take your time.

In the end, the game is cleared when the player visits the police station with a note or a note that proves the real culprit, with the pistol, chemicals, and other incriminating evidence flushed down the sewers.

At the time of its release, the game was priced at 9,800 yen, an unusually high price for Famicom software at the time, but it is a masterpiece that is well worth the price.
