Game Reviews

“1943” is an arcade game ported to the Famicom (NES) that takes place during the Battle of Midway in the Pacific War, in which players control the P-38 Lightning, an American army fighter, as it takes on the Japanese Army.

In addition to the somersault and side-fighter systems carried over from the previous “1942” game, many new systems have been added, including a variety of energy-based and timed armaments and the “Mega Crash” emergency evasion system.

The NES version of “1943” is not a faithful port of the arcade version, but has several changes, such as “elimination of 2-player simultaneous play,” “password input available,” “addition of tame-fire laser,” “customization of own ship,” and “enemy ships are not Japanese battleships but those of fictional countries. There is no remaining aircraft system, and there is no “energy” system.

There is no remaining aircraft system, and the game is over when you lose “energy”. Energy” is reduced by enemy attacks. When the energy level reaches zero, the game is not immediately over. If the ship is hit by an enemy or a bullet while the energy level is zero, the ship will explode and the game is over. Energy is also consumed over time.

Game System

  • You control your ship with an 8-way lever (move) and two buttons (attack, mega crash).
  • By taking items, etc., the player can use six different types of shots. Special shots have a limited usage time.
  • Mega Crash is a special attack that consumes energy to make enemy bullets disappear from the entire screen and attack the enemy. There are three different patterns of Mega Crash, depending on the distance from the enemy bullet at the time of use and the type of stage.
  • Pressing both buttons at the same time causes a somersault, making the user invincible for a certain period of time. There is a limit to the number of times you can do this.
  • This title uses an energy system instead of a residual aircraft system. Energy decreases with the passage of time, collisions with enemy aircraft and bullets, and the use of the Mega Crash, and the game is over when the energy drops below zero due to enemy attacks (the game is not over even when the energy drops to zero due to the passage of time or the use of the Mega Crash).
  • Energy is 64 at the beginning of the game and is replenished before the start of each stage. It can also be replenished by items in the middle of a stage. The maximum energy is increased by 8 for every 3 stages cleared.
  • When your aircraft is hit by an enemy bullet, it is momentarily inoperable. The damage caused by contact with an enemy plane is much greater than that of enemy bullets, and in the case of large planes, a single collision can result in game over.
  • The stage consists of the first half of an aerial battle and the second half of a boss battle. After completing the aerial battle, a message indicating that the target has been found is displayed, and the player enters a battle with the enemy fleet at sea. The stage is cleared when the enemy’s flagship (boss) is finally destroyed (achieving a destruction rate of 70% or higher). If the destruction rate is less than 70% and the ship is not destroyed, the operation will be considered a failure, and the boss battle will have to be restarted from the beginning.
