Game Reviews

“Capcom’s Gold Medal Challenge ’92” (known in Japan as Capcom Barcelona ’92) is a sports game for the NES based on the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. The game allows players to enjoy a wide variety of competitions in a total of 18 events, including swimming, track and field, gymnastics, marathon, and more.

All 18 competitions in “Capcom’s Gold Medal Challenge ’92”
Short distance running (3 kinds), 400m relay, 110m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, shot put, swimming (5 kinds), weightlifting, vaulting, marathon

Up to eight people can play at the same time, so elementary school students at that time enjoyed the Olympic spirit by gathering at the homes of friends who had this game and enjoying playing together in large numbers.

There are two game modes in “Capcom’s Gold Medal Challenge ’92”: Training Mode and World Tournament Mode.

In “Training Mode,” you can practice all 17 events except the marathon. If a world record is set, it will be a reference record and not a new record.

In World Tournament Mode, players play one of 17 events out of a total of 18, with a marathon interspersed along the way. Up to 8 players can play in this story mode. The game can be saved in the middle of the game.

All competitions have a “QUALIFY” (quota), and if you do not pass this record, you will be disqualified. Also, if you break a world record, it will be reflected in the strength of the CPU the next time you play accordingly.

The marathon is inserted in the form of a TV broadcast between each competition in the “World Tournament Mode,” and the running speed is entered each time. The format is similar to a simulation game, in which players must consider how to distribute their pace so that they do not run out of stamina.

At the end of the final event, the country with the most gold medals will be declared the winner.
